Some people may have used lawn mowers in order to make a little extra cash, from younger people cutting a neighbor's grass to professionals who have their own business.

However, a Colorado couple is trying to help homeless people try and make some money through side occupations like lawn care and snow shoveling. A recent article in the Colorado Springs Gazette featured the efforts of Mike and Brenda McCartney, who have set up a Christian organization to help homeless people.

"We want to set up a place where God can be impacting their lives positively," Mike McCartney told the paper.

Along with finding work for the homeless, the McCartneys hold Bible discussion meetings for those that are less fortunate. Most of the couple's efforts are funded out of their own pocket, though they are applying for nonprofit status.

Some of the homeless people who gather at the meetings have found themselves in their situations after losing a job. The government recently reported that the unemployment rate is at 10 percent with many experts predicting it will stay at that level for much of 2010.
